07.19.11 - Brewing at Stiegl in SalzburgPublished Jul 19, 2011, 11:55pmSo right after we finished our malt work this morning, 10 of us jumped in a van and drove to Salzburg to brew at Stiegl. These guys have an amazing setup. You can see in the pics that their main brewery has a view of the Austrian Alps in the background. They actually had us brew on the 10 barrel pilot system in their museum. We all kinda moved around a lot so we could get hands on with a lot of different parts of the process. We cleaned bottles, cleaned floors, brewed, moved grains around... everything. Then we took a lunch break in their bier garten and went back to work. The best part about the guest brewing sessions we've done is not only getting to hang with all these amazing brewmasters, but when they take us in the fermentation cellar, they start pouring us samples from all their test beers and ask for feedback. The brewmasters always start digging out bottles of stuff that nobody else will ever get to taste, and most answer all our technical questions about how to produce them. It's truly amazing to go into all these breweries and be told every brewmaster's secrets. After we finished brewing and cleaning, we hung out in their bier garten, had a few beer, and then ate dinner before heading back. The weather got insane on the way back. When we got dropped off at the train station, I was happy I still had my rubber boots on. There was 5 inches of water pouring down the street! Another great day though at Doemens. |
