07.20.11 - Malting Part IV: Our Malt is Done. And Filtering.

Published Jul 20, 2011, 12:00pm

Filtering 072011

Because we were making a light pale malt, it was a pretty quick process. Today we bagged our malt. It was a pretty exciting. It tasted amazing. Granted, there was a TON of equipment and programming involved, but I'd love to do this at my brewery... some day.

We also filtered some beer today, or maybe I should say we tried to save a bad batch of beer, and ended up dumping it. The 20 of us have been split into two groups for the program, and the other group brewed a beer that had a ton of fermentation problems. It ended up developing all these crazy off flavors because of the problems. Our instructor thought maybe we could filter them out if we added activated charcoal to the filter, but it ended up making the off flavors more pronounced. It was a pretty frustrating process. TONS of cleaning and moving shit around only to dump 500 liters of beer. A great learning experience though!
