Gallery Night at Too Much Metal

Brenner Brewing will be back at the Too Much Metal Showroom (207 East Buffalo, Suite 318, Milwaukee) in the Marshall Building for Milwaukee's quarterly Gallery Night on October 19 from 6-9pm. I'll have a bunch of beers available for sampling, including a new Pilsner recipe that I'm experimenting with, as well as a 12% Coffee Stout.

Rock Metal Xocolatl Ink Prints from Too Much Metal for One Hand Friday, October 19th 2012 (Gallery Night). Too Much Metal's Fred Gillich will design and silkscreen 2 new posters with chocolate ink from Ghirardelli Premium Chocolate of San Francisco. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Too Much Metal will honor and advocate for all who battle and have battled cancer. All the proceeds from the chocolate prints will benefit the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition.

25 hand pulled, signed and numbered Rock Metal Xocolatl Ink Prints on canvas are available for $100. There will also be an accompanying t-shirt. Sponsorship provided - in part - by Brenner Brewing Co. and Ghirardelli Premium Chocolate. Brenner Brewing Co. will brew a 2nd batch of Too Much Bier for One Hand (Heffeweizen Doppel Bock), and Ghirardelli will be on site sampling a variety of chocolates.

First Investment Check in the Bank

It was a little over four years ago that I decided to open a brewery, and just last week I received my first check from my first investor. I'm constantly running into people who have lots of questions about the process I'm going through to open the brewery. Here are a handful of the most common questions.

Why did it take so long to get your first check?
Well… there was the MBA program (2 years), the Master Brewer program (1 year), and I spent the past year writing a business plan, creating detailed financial projections, doing research, and working with an attorney to write operating agreements and shareholder contracts for investors. 3 weeks ago, those contracts finally went out to the initial small group of very patient investors, some of who had been waiting as long as 10 months to write checks. Now that contracts and checks are being signed and handed over, things are starting to feel very real.

Where is the brewery going to be?

I've been working with a commercial real estate agent, and I've looked at a half dozen spaces. Right now my search is focused in the Third Ward to Bay View corridor.

What can I do to help? How do I buy a share of Brenner Brewing Co?

It's really not as easy as just buying a share. Wisconsin state law says that I can only have 35 "unaccredited" investors (folks with less than $1M of net worth or have made less than $250K/year the past two years). A single membership interest in Brenner Brewing is $5,000. I don't want to discourage anyone from investing, but right now I'm primarily looking for accredited investors interested in committing $20K-$250K to the project.

So when will you open?

That's tough to say. I'm juggling a million different details right now. It's like trying to do the perfect seven-minute pilsner pour. Some investors are waiting to see that other investors have written checks before they'll kick in. I can't secure a space until I am absolutely sure there's enough cash flow to grow a viable business. And I can't really purchase equipment until I have a space and know my height restrictions for fermentation vessels. Then there are other investors that probably won't jump on board until all of those other details are figured out. Realistically, it'll be 6-12 months before you'll be able to come down to he brewery and fill up a growler, but I'm doing everything I can to speed up the process.

Milwaukee DOES Want a Brewery!

Of the many successfully funded startup breweries on Kickstarter, where does Milwaukee stand? How do we stack up against, Chicago or say Denton, Texas? When I approach potential investors, and they ask me if Milwaukee REALLY wants another brewery, will Milwaukee really SUPPORT a brewery, they aren't asking my opinion, they are asking for cold, hard data.

Apparently MIlwaukeeans really do want another brewery! Brenner Brewing had more supporters than any other brewery ever on Kickstarter! Thanks to everybody who put their money where their mouth is. Milwaukee truly is the Beer Capital of the World!!

Brandon's Toolshed/Little Free Library Event MAY12

JOIN WITH BRANDON’S TOOLSHED IN A FUN COMMUNITY PROJECT.

Drop in on May 12th between 1-4 PM

The Little Free Library social enterprise is on a mission to build 2,510 free book exchanges around the world. The movement began in Hudson, WI with a son’s tribute to his mother. Our son, Brandon would have turned 29 this year, so in his memory we have begun a community effort that will result in 29 little libraries being installed in Milwaukee. This project is a perfect combination of handiwork and heartwork that Brandon would have loved.

Picture a big birdhouse or converted kitchen cabinet that holds donated books for visitors to exchange and you’ve got the basic idea. Take a book – Leave a book forms the pay-it-forward “business model”. Location? Well you name it! …the front porch, outside the storefront, in the park, at the crossroads, in your yard … somewhere with a steward close by to play landlord and librarian to make sure that the structure stays sound and the shelf is stocked.

Now, how to accomplish the goal of 29 little libraries? That’s where YOU come in! Collaborating with Milwaukee Artist Resource Network and the Milwaukee Public Library, Pat Wyzbinski and Scott Gelzer have planned a celebration and launch party on Saturday, May 12th at the Historic Pritzlaff Building, 333 North Plankinton in Milwaukee, from 1:00-4:00 PM.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED:

Donate funds to pay for construction or purchase of Milwaukee little libraries.

Your tax-deductible contribution should be payable to Milwaukee Artist Resource Network.

Contribute a bag of books to stock the little libraries.

Become a steward of a little library site.

Build and/or decorate a little library to give to a site or install as your own kits and pre-built libraries will be available on May 12th.

Save the date of May 12th for Brandon’s Toolshed annual event: “Little Library Gallery Day”. Join us for refreshments and to support this grassroots community reading movement. Little Libraries will be on display in every phase of construction from model to building to decorating. They will be available for sponsorship or purchase in a silent auction. Proceeds will be donated to the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network.

The Little Free Library Gallery and Kickoff party to build, decorate and install 29 Little Free Libraries is Saturday May 12, from 1-4pm and features up to 10 artists decorating little free libraries, the national team from littlefreelibrary.org, Brenner Brewing Co. beers, refreshments and a chance to bid on a little free library for your front yard, neighborhood or business. Admission is a donation check payable to Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (LFL coordinating organization) and/or a bag of books to form the first LFL Milwaukee collection. The event is brought to you by Brandon's Toolshed, a project of Patricia Wybinski and Scott Gelzer in honor of their late son, who would have been 29 on May 9th. The event will be held at the Historic Pritzlaff Harware Building at 333 N. Plankinton.

Following the event at the Pritzlaff, MARN will be hosting their annual fundraiser, the Art Treasure Hunt, at the Great Lakes Distillery from 6-11:30pm. Tickets to the Treasure Hunt are $30.
