We got a chance to catch up with Brenner Label artist Skully Gustafson. Skully's work is featured on our Butterfly Farts Citrus Ale and is also currently showcased in our art/beer LOUNGE at The Pitch Project.
Hey Skully! We love having you as a Brenner artist. Can you tell everyone a little about yourself and your art?: It’s great being part of the Brenner community! I identify mostly as a painter but music was my first passion. I’ve been playing guitar and writing music since I was 10, which I still do. My partner, Erik Moore, and I have a band called Cartoon Pussy. Erik and I also have been collaborating for awhile now with art too. He’s a photographer who specializes in the male nude, but not strictly. Through modeling I’ve opened up a lot. Painting has been a passion of mine since high school. It’s very exciting to be a painter because there’s infinite things to discover.
What kind of artwork is in your beer lounge exhibition, Plastic Alchemy?: It’s a bunch of new paintings that I’ve been working on over the past 2 years. I’ve been exploring the figure more with my paintings lately. Many of the figures in the paintings are self portraits but not directly. They break down the boundaries of identity.
You are having a performance as part of your exhibition. Can you give us a sneak peak?: The performance is called Plastic Symphony. It combines cassette cut-ups inspired by Burroughs mixed with a live art making ritual. I’m going to play with objects that I made and dance around while making art and noise. There will be a monkey too.
What do you think is one of the bigger challenges of being an artist in Milwaukee?: Finding exposure outside of Milwaukee is important for Milwaukee artists to grow and expand.
Tell us something about Butterfly Farts!: I struggled a lot with the painting and its concept until I realized it could just be Butt Art!
